Easy Hat Storage Solution with Pegboard

The men in my life, big and small, have too many baseball caps for my liking.  They end up under my feet when I have a big pile of laundry in my arms, on the kitchen counter, family room, laundry room floor, outside, and in my car- basically, everywhere except their rooms or their laundry room hooks.  We have enough clutter issues, no need to add keep the hat issues too.  I'd also like to get places on time close to on time without someone needing to take a few extra minutes to look for the right hat.

I’d had enough of this earlier this summer, but just recently got around to this project.  It took us a total of about 20 minutes… What took us so long to get to it?!  I had bigger ideas but going back to work gave me a reality check on time.  We’ll see if I ever change it up to my original plan.  It’s up, it works, who cares?  No one.

We’ve lived with it for two weeks.  Right now as I type, there are only two hats in the laundry room floor as opposed to the fifteen from 2 weeks ago.  Why?  Because I did this:

I admit, it’s nothing special to look at, but it’s made such a difference in my life.   It’s functionality makes it beautiful to me.

The bookshelf used to live in my son’s room, but we just replaced it with a different piece of furniture.  I’m glad we decided to repurpose it as a cleat/ boot shelf.

The pegboard is a half sheet my husband cut and hung for me.  He hung it on studs with ¼” washers between the wall and board so that my hooks would hang easily.  While I worked on this, he hung more pegboard over the tool bench and organized tools.  We bought two of these sets and I didn’t even use a third of it for my operation.

It works beautifully.  My little guy’s hats are the four lowest hooks, my big guy has the rest of that bottom row and the next row, too.  Yes, you see 3 camouflage hats in his row.  Don’t think that’s all he has.  The top two rows go to the only one who can reach them- my husband.
Seriously, the hats are no longer my enemy.  I haven’t slipped on one in the laundry room lately or anything.

Beautiful. Not fancy or decorated, but beautiful still.

Have you done any function over fashion type of fixes lately?  I’d love to hear about them!

  1. Those hats do get everywhere don't they? My husband is the only one who wears them, but he seems to have enough for all three of us. Great idea getting them all organized. No more tripping and slipping!
